Everybody says that Wacom are the best, and for sure they have a strong "tradition"!
But I bought an Aiptek Hyper Pen 12000 U and I must say it's large (A4! 8x11''), works greatly, and costs about 1/4 of Wacoms. I spent about 80 € for it (less than 100 US$) buying it online.

I don't know much when it comes to tablets, but apprently a Wacom Graphire is good for editing photos?

I'd recommend Wacom as a company because they have good products and good services. They'll last you a while, even if they're not the cheapest.

Wacom definitely, and go with a 6x8. You'll be able to use it for pretty well everything, as far as I know, while 4x5 might be too small for you.

Buy a Wacom! industry standard. I've had mine for approximately 2 years now and I love it. They also have a questionnaire that helps you decide the best tablet model for your needs. :)
